8 Chains North is Loudoun’s newest winery. It is named after a site where the winery’s vineyard is planted near Waterford. During the Civil War, Confederate engineers made a river crossing on the winery’s site that was 1.8 chains (one chain equals 66 feet) upriver of one of Col. White’s river fields in Leesburg. 8 Chains North opened July 3.

Hours: Open and operating Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

We invite you to come check out the Aquiary (ā•kwee•air•ee) at our new office. That’s not a typo – we’ve actually made up a word to describe something no current words adequately describe.

The Aquiary is a destination for Loudoun kids and their parents to learn about water in Loudoun, and hopefully walk away with a greater appreciation for what it takes to get it to them, and treat it for them. It’s also a place where we can share our passion for water with the community, such that they become a little more compassionate about their use of it.

We’re proud to announce that the Aquiary has been recognized by the National Wildlife Federation as an official Certified Wildlife Habitat™ site.

Our Aquiary, a place for water learning and appreciation, is now open. Stop by during regular business hours Monday-Friday from 8:00-5:00 for a self-guided tour of our exhibits. We can also schedule group tours best for kids 8 and up. Call 571.291.7700 for more information.Would you like a Loudoun Water representative to talk with your group about water supply as a resource, water quality, wastewater or drinking water treatment or water stewardship? You pick the subject matter and the time allotment and we’ll provide an action-learning presentation that’s appropriate for your grade level. Contact the Manager of Communications at 571.291.7700.We are not offering tours of our Broad Run Water Reclamation Facility due to security reasons. However, please plan to visit The Aquiary inside our Administration building.Tours of Loudoun Water supplier treatment plants can be arranged by contacting our suppliers directly. Many of the local utilities are undergoing upgrades and have suspended tours until further notice. Call 703.550.9740 for tours of Fairfax County’s wastewater plant in Lorton. The City of Fairfax no longer offers tours of the Goose Creek Plant in Ashburn. Tours of the Town of Leesburg’s treatment facilities have been suspended until expansion construction is complete. Fairfax Water’s Corbalis plant in Herndon have been suspended until expansion construction is complete. If you’re interested in an outdoor activity that you can do on your own, visit Sully Elementary’s Discovery Park in Sterling. Discovery Park is a community built playground that incorporates learning with fun. Loudoun Water donated a water wall to the playground that depicts the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The playground is open to the public after school and on weekends. You may be able to arrange a field trip to Discovery Park. Contact Sully Elementary School for details.

The oldest school building in Loudoun County, the Oakdale School House is a charming symbol of Lincoln’s history. Built by the Quakers of Goose Creek in 1815, the schoolroom has been furnished and equipped with everything from school benches to slates to the books that were used in the year 1818. Most of the children who attended Oakdale were not Quakers, and several were the children of slaves and other African American children, making Oakdale one of the first integrated schools in Virginia.

Slavery likely began in Loudoun in the early 1720’s. Slaves lived in poor quarters, and many of the structures that housed slaves had fallen into disrepair before the end of the 19th century. Today, the Arcola slave quarters is one of the few remaining reminders of Loudoun’s African American antebellum history.

The building is thought to have served as a home to slaves working on the James Lewis farm in the first half of the 1800s. The Lewis farm began when Vincent Lewis purchased the land in 1744. When he died, the farm was divided between his sons, James and Charles Lewis. The James Lewis farm prospered in the mid-1800’s but later declined. The Neal family, former slaves of the Lewis family, stilled lived on the property in 1870. The farm was sold at auction in 1885 after the family died out.

Founded in 1733 by a Quaker from Pennsylvania, Waterford lies around Catoctin Creek and contains many buildings built before 1840. Today, visitors to Waterford, Virginia, experience many of the same views as residents in the 19th century. Waterford preserves the ambiance and many of the structures that characterized it during its heyday as a flour milling town in the 19th century.

The village is a Loudoun County Historic and Cultural Conservation Site, on the Virginia Historic Landmarks Register, on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1970, the entire village, with the farmland surrounding it, was designated a National Historic Landmark District, one of only three such landmarks in the entire United States.
