8 Chains North is Loudoun’s newest winery. It is named after a site where the winery’s vineyard is planted near Waterford. During the Civil War, Confederate engineers made a river crossing on the winery’s site that was 1.8 chains (one chain equals 66 feet) upriver of one of Col. White’s river fields in Leesburg. 8 Chains North opened July 3.

Hours: Open and operating Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Location: 8 Chains North Winery 38593 Daymont Ln Waterford, VA 20197-1038

Zephaniah wine was born from years of dreams of raising grapes and making wine in Loudoun County, Virginia. We wanted to honor the land we love and preserve its productivity and integrity. We were raised on this farm, and it served as our heart’s home even when we lived in Europe and Asia. Traveling gave us different views of the possibilities for our land. Seeing the vineyards in Italy heightened our desire to raise fine grapes. We studied and learned to make these dreams reality. Join us in our vineyard and enjoy our wine.

The vineyards at Willowcroft are located high atop the Catoctin Ridge on the southern tip of Leesburg, VA. Our picnic area boasts breathless panoramic views of Loudoun Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Willowcroft’s personal attention to detail, both in the vineyard and the winery, has resulted in national award-winning wines, time after time.

In the 1800s the slopes were recognized for their potential and were planted to orchards. Today vineyards, which have replaced the fruit trees, yield superior grapes. The rustic beauty of the winery, housed in the old red barn, and the award-winning wines, will give you reason to return to this peaceful spot.

Wayne and Juanita Swedenburg, came to this farm in 1978, both on the heels of retirement from government service. Along with their son Marc, the Swedenburgs planted the entire vineyard, mostly by hand, sometimes by the light of the family pickup truck at night! After many years of hard work, the family enjoyed the first “crush” in 1987, and have been producing fine wines ever since!

The vineyard was founded in April 2004 with the planting of a small research vineyard of 72 vines. The purpose of this original planting was to evaluate the suitability of different varietals and rootstocks in our soil. This small experiment confirmed much of the research we performed during our initial feasibility studies. These vines were eventually pulled up and the rows re-aligned, but we did save the very first vine that we planted and moved it to the corner of the vineyard closest to the house. It continues to thrive.
